How to Get There
From Waterford City follow the Dunmore Road/R683 to Passage Cross. Turn left here for a further 1km. At a fork in the road continue straight ahead on the R683 for a further 5kms before reaching the village of Passage East. Alternatively take the right fork and follow the road past Jack Meades Pub for a further 3kms until you reach Faithlegg Church and parking on your left hand side.
Did You Know
- Faithlegg was one of the first parishes to be established after the Norman conquest of Ireland 1169-1171.
- The Power family secured the area around Faithleggin 1819 and were landlords until Faithlegg House and farm was sold to the De La Salle order in 1936. Their wider lands were secured by the Land Commission and entered into local family ownership thereafter.
- Cheekpoint marks the meeting place of the three sister’s river network; the Suir, Nore and Barrow which flow to the sea creating Waterford Harbour. It is also the meeting place of the provinces of Munster and Leinster and the counties of Waterford, Kilkenny and Wexford.
- The Barrow Bridge, visible from Cheekpoint was once Irelands’ longest bridge at 650 metres in length and consists of 13 fixed spans mounted on twin2.5metre diameter cast iron cylinders filled with concrete.
- At the Hurt Hill viewing point, walkers are 90 metres above the estuary with excellent views down river as the ferry travels between Passage East, Co. Waterford and Ballyhack, Co. Wexford. Nobody is quite sure of the exact age of the ferry service but we do know that the rights to operate it were granted to the Knights Templar following the arrival of the Normans in 1171.
