The Viking Triangle is the historic heart of Waterford city. Within a compact area you’ll find several of the city’s best heritage attractions.
Highlights include:
Reginald’s Tower — Ireland’s oldest civic building, with exhibits on Viking and medieval Waterford.
The Medieval Museum (aka part of Waterford Treasures) — with exquisitely preserved medieval artefacts, vaulted chambers, and royal items like Henry VIII’s “Cap of Maintenance.”
Bishop’s Palace / House of Waterford — Georgian architecture, city history, and more displays.
This is a great way to get immersed in Waterford’s past in just a few hours (or a full afternoon, depending on your pace).
This is one of the most scenic and popular activities in the region. The Greenway is a 46 km off‑road trail along a former railway line that links Waterford city with the coastal town of Dungarvan. You’ll pass over bridges and viaducts, through countryside, by rivers, and through tunnels — it’s a stunning way to see the landscape. You don’t have to do the full 46 km — many people pick a segment, do a return trip, or cycle one direction and get picked up.
Waterford’s coastline is spectacular. A drive along the Copper Coast Geopark (between Tramore and Dungarvan) is often recommended as one of the top “scenic drives” in Ireland. Along that coast, you can also do the Ardmore Cliff Walk (a loop walk with sea views) and visit the fishing village of Ardmore.
If you appreciate gardens and country estates:
Curraghmore House & Gardens is the huge historic estate near Portlaw. It has woodlands, formal gardens, follies, historic structures, and is often open for tours.
Mount Congreve Gardens is a botanical gem in Waterford’s “Ancient East” — very rich plant collections, woodland walks, and a peaceful setting.
These give you a quieter, scenic contrast to the city and coastline.
These are great day‑trip extensions from Waterford:
Dungarvan is the other terminus of the Greenway. It’s a coastal town with seafood, harbour life, and good local charm.
Dunmore East is a coastal village with coves, walks, cliffs, surfing, kayaking, and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.
