The Sgilloges Walk, Nire Valley
The Sgilloges Walk – Nire Valley / Siúlóid Sciollóg – Gleann na hUidhre
The Sgilloges Walk is marked with navy blue waymarkers, the Blue Route. In the Comeragh Mountains, there are 15 permanent lakes to be found. Six of these are in the Nire Valley itself and they are collectively called The Nire Group. The Sgilloges are two of these six lakes. You will see a waterfall cascading from the top of the mountain on the back wall of the first lake. This waterfall is called “Bean Piobra” which means “Woman with the Pipe.” It has been given this name because when the wind blows from the south west, the water is blown back over the watefall and from a distance it looks like smoke rising.
Directions
From Dungarvan follow the signs for the N72 West via the R672 (go through one roundabout). Continue onto the N72 for 300m and turn right onto the R672 just after the petrol station on your right. Continue onto the R671. Turn right toward Knockaun. Proceed along this road in an easterly direction for about 4km until you come to a bridge. At this point take the right fork before you cross the bridge and continue on for about a further 4km until you come to a car park (GPS: 52.267° N 7.595° W) on your left hand side.
