The Gap Walk – Nire Valley / Siúlóid an Bhearna – Gleann na hUidhre
The Gap Walk is a linear walk marked with green waymarkers to and from the Nire Valley car park. This trail is a natural pass through the Comeragh Mountains which has been in use for centuries. Over the years it has been mainly used as a route from The Nire to Rathgormack, and vice versa. Locally it is known as “Beárna Bhéil a’ Bhealaigh” or “the Gap of the Mouth of the Pass”. If visibility is good at The Gap, you will be able to see the surrounding landscapes of counties Waterford, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford as well as Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs. You may also be able to make out the South East Coast – known as the Copper Coast – and even Tramore, Hook Head and Hook Lighthouse.
Directions
From Dungarvan follow the signs for the N72 West via the R672 (go through one roundabout). Continue onto the N72 for 300m and turn right onto the R672 just after the petrol station on your right. Continue onto the R671. Turn right toward Knockaun. Proceed along this road in an easterly direction for about 4km until you come to a bridge. At this point take the right fork before you cross the bridge and continue on for about a further 4km until you come to a car park (GPS: 52.267° N 7.595° W) on your left hand side.
