Mount Congreve Gardens

Kilmeaden

Boasting one of the largest private collections of plants globally and described as ‘A Great Garden of the World’ the entire collection features plants from every continent. Mount Congreve House, home to six generations of Congreves, was built in 1760 by the celebrated local architect John Roberts. Inspired by Mr Lionel de Rothschild’s exceptional garden at Exbury in Hampshire, works began on Mount Congreve’s Garden in the 1950s by Garden Director Herman Dool. Ambrose Congreve’s passion for his spectacular garden is still evident today.

To make the most of your visit take a guided tour where you will enter the gardens through the house, as the Congreves once did. And great news: children under 16 go free –  making it a perfect day out for families (there even a woodland playground!).

Afterwards, you can relax in the Stables Café where you will be served only the freshest of local produce, prepared and cooked daily.

Or why not step back in time and experience afternoon tea and old-world charm in the beautifully restored Tack Room? Surrounded by gardens, trees, birds and wildlife, our afternoon tea is served on three-tier cake stands with crisp white linen, Irish silverware and fine bone china.

For those looking to hold an unforgettable event, Mount Congreve Gardens cater for everything from intimate dining to grand banqueting. Memorable occasions can be enjoyed in both the Library Room and the Large Drawing Room, also known as the Chinese Room due to its exquisite hand-painted wallpaper.

No visit to Mount Congreve Gardens is complete without a visit to FOXFORD – it’s more than just a gift store. It offers a unique range of gift ideas inspired by the beauty of nature and the gardens. Products include handmade soaps, beeswax candles and much more – there really is something for everyone.

While you’re there, why not stay a little longer? Mount Congreve’s Forest accommodation offers a range of inviting options—from cosy Gate Lodges and eco-cabins with hot tubs to charming bell tents and a Courtyard Suite nestled within Mount Congreve House. Some accommodations are even dog-friendly! As a resident, you’ll hold the keys to the gardens—enjoying peaceful, private access once the crowds have departed.

Mount Congreve Gardens are committed to creating a sustainable garden environment and welcome visitors of all ages, abilities and cultures.

To help protect the estate’s biodiversity, dogs are not permitted in the main gardens. However, they are welcome in the wetlands walk, the Waterford Greenway and in the Stables Café.
