Heritage and Nature Walk
Explore Kilmacthomas: A Scenic Loop Through History and Nature
Starting and ending in the charming village of Kilmacthomas, this picturesque loop walk offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, local heritage and peaceful countryside. Ideal for a leisurely stroll or a more energetic hike, the route showcases some of the area’s most iconic sights and hidden gems.
Begin your journey by crossing the beautifully restored Kilmacthomas Viaduct, an architectural highlight of the Waterford Greenway that once carried trains across the Mahon River. From this elevated vantage point, take in sweeping views of the surrounding landscape – a patchwork of fields, riverbanks and the dramatic Comeragh Mountains in the distance.
Continue on to the historic Famine Workhouse, a poignant reminder of Ireland’s past, now thoughtfully repurposed as the Kilmacthomas Workhouse Café and craft centre. It’s a great spot to pause, reflect and refuel with homemade treats, while browsing locally made gifts and artwork.
The loop winds through quiet rural paths and scenic stretches of the Greenway, offering glimpses of old railway heritage, native wildlife and ever-changing skies. Whether you’re here for the history, the scenery or simply the fresh air, this walk is a rewarding way to experience the unique character of Kilmacthomas and its surroundings.
