Barron’s Bakery & Coffee House
A Taste of Tradition in Cappoquin
Founded in 1887, Barron’s Bakery is a living piece of Waterford’s heritage. Still in Cappoquin town, the bakery continues to use the original Scotch Brick Ovens — possibly the last bakery in Ireland to do so — baking crusty loaves that are proved slowly, shaped by hand, and boast a flavour, texture, and crust you won’t find elsewhere.
What Makes Barron’s Special
-
Heritage Craftsmanship: With roots stretching back to John Barron (1858-1930), whose early training as a baker laid the foundation, every loaf speaks to generations of skill.
-
The Oven: Those Scotch Brick Ovens are central — they give the bread a unique crust and flavour so nostalgic, so local.
-
Slow Proofing & Hand Shaping: The process is unhurried — natural proving and hand shaping give each loaf character and craftsmanship.
What to Try
If you visit, be sure to sample their rustic breads — the crunchy crust, the flavour, the smell when the loaves first come out of the oven — it’s all part of the experience. Also, their café offers a cozy place to enjoy their baked goods fresh, possibly with a cup of coffee and a view into Cappoquin’s charm.
