Salterbridge House & Gardens

Cappoquin

Set within acres of beautifully planted grounds, Salterbridge House & Gardens is a charming Victorian country house estate featuring an impressive collection of specialist trees and shrubs. Developed and carefully curated over the past 20 years, the gardens offer a rich and varied display, particularly renowned for their maples, camellias, rhododendrons, and hydrangeas.

Gardens & Grounds

The gardens are home to a number of remarkable specimens, including four magnificent Irish yews planted over 200 years ago, along with a cork oak, Indian horse chestnut, and a rare single-leaved ash. Woodland planting and seasonal colour make this a delightful space to explore, with the garden at its most vibrant during the spring months. Suitable for visitors of all ages, it offers a peaceful and engaging experience in a natural setting.

A House with History

Salterbridge House has a long and fascinating history. The original house on the site was built around 1750 by Richard Musgrave on land acquired from the Lismore Castle estate. In 1849, a striking Victorian façade was added, creating the elegant country house seen today, arranged around three sides of a courtyard.

Architectural highlights include a three-bay projecting centre with parapet and pilasters, two-storey wings with eaved roofs, and distinctive bow features. Inside, the drawing room is particularly notable for its decorative ceiling of scrolls and shields. The house also features Wyatt windows, a classical glazed porch, and a number of Georgian-style windows within the courtyard.
