Aonach na nDéise – Woodstown Viking Heritage Festival

Step back into the world of the Vikings at Aonach na nDéise, a free, family-friendly Heritage Week festival taking place at the Woodstown Viking Site along the Waterford Greenway on Saturday, 15th of August from 12 pm to 4 pm, and Sunday, 16th August from 10 am to 5 pm.

Discover the daily life, skills, and traditions of the Vikings through an exciting programme of living history displays, archaeology activities, battle demonstrations, and hands-on entertainment.

Meet members of Déise Medieval as they bring Viking life to the present day, try the TVAS Archaeology Dig in a Box, and take on the National Museum of Ireland’s Viking Artefact Challenge. Visitors can also explore an exhibition from The Discovery Programme and Abarta Heritage, revealing what is known about the Woodstown site and how archaeologists have surveyed it.

Throughout the weekend, enjoy Western-style Viking battles, Eastern-style bridge-fighting demonstrations, a Viking boat, Irish wolfhounds, birds of prey, and activities for younger visitors with Kiddie Vikes. Fuinseog Woodland Crafts will also host traditional games and family-friendly fun.

Bring a picnic and spend the day enjoying the entertainment while learning more about Woodstown’s fascinating Viking heritage.

The site is located approximately a 20-minute walk from the Greenway car park at Carriganore. As this is an outdoor event held on unevent ground, visitors should wear suitable footwear and clothing for the weather.
