As part of ROOTS – Conversations Inspired by Nature, Mount Congreve welcomes wallpaper maker, conservator and researcher David Skinner for a fascinating illustrated talk exploring the history of Chinese wallpaper and the remarkable example preserved at Mount Congreve.
ROOTS is a series of Sunday talks at Mount Congreve, bringing together stories, people and ideas inspired by nature. Running across the autumn and winter, the series explores a diverse range of subjects, from Irish gardens and biodiversity to historic wallpaper and Waterford’s rich heritage.
For this November conversation, David Skinner will turn his attention to Chinese Wallpaper at Mount Congreve, tracing the amazing story of the paper from its origins in China to its eventual arrival in Europe.
The Chinese wallpaper at Mount Congreve is a rare and remarkably well-preserved example of an unusual variety of design, with only a small number of equivalent sets known to survive across Europe. During the illustrated talk, David will trace the wallpaper back to the workshop in Canton where it was made and explore the journey that brought it from China to Mount Congreve.
The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A and an opportunity to meet the speaker afterwards. Guests are invited to explore Mount Congreve Gardens, browse the shop and enjoy lunch in The Stables Café.
