The Wild Sea Way

The Wild Sea Way invites you to experience Waterford’s coastline at its most vibrant and refreshing, where long sandy beaches, hidden coves, and colourful harbour villages are all within easy reach. Designed for slow, sustainable travel, this two-day journey begins in Waterford and brings you first to the lively seaside town of Tramore, before continuing to the postcard-perfect harbour of Dunmore East. Travelling by public transport and exploring on foot, you’ll uncover the rhythm of the coast  from morning sea air and cliff walks to relaxed seaside dining and evenings by the harbour.

Day One: Tramore Coastal Experience

Morning: Waterford to Tramore

Depart Waterford by bus (Route 360) to Tramore. You can catch the bus at the bus station on the quayside in Waterford City, full timetable here  Timetable

 The journey takes approximately 20 minutes and provides a simple, low-impact connection to the coast. Begin your day with a walk along Tramore Beach or a short stop for a coffee at The Coastgaurd Cultural Centre. 

Late Morning: Coastal Exploration

From Tramore, take time to explore the surrounding coastline on foot, following quiet paths and winding roads that lead you to hidden coves, rocky outcrops, and sweeping, uninterrupted sea views. This stretch of coast invites you to slow your pace and fully immerse yourself in the landscape pause to watch the waves roll in, listen to the seabirds overhead, and take in the ever-changing colours of the sea and sky. Whether you stop for a swim, a photo, or simply a moment of stillness, this is a part of the journey best enjoyed without rushing, where every turn reveals something new.

Midday: Return to Tramore for Lunch

Make your way back into Tramore town and enjoy lunch at Majestic Hotel Tramore. With views out over the bay, it’s the perfect place to relax and refuel before the afternoon.While in the area, take time to explore more of what Tramore has to offer. Known for its long sandy beach and Atlantic swells, Tramore is a popular spot for surfing and water sports, with lessons and equipment hire available locally. If you prefer to stay on land, enjoy a walk along the promenade, wander the dunes, or relax on one of the quieter stretches of beach. With plenty of cafés, scenic viewpoints, and seaside atmosphere.

Afternoon: Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens

After lunch, make your way to Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens, where the pace of the day shifts completely. These beautifully designed gardens offer a calm and immersive experience, with winding paths, reflective water features, and carefully curated landscapes inspired by Japanese tradition and the life of Lafcadio Hearn. Moving through the gardens feels like stepping into another world, providing a peaceful contrast to the energy of the coastline earlier in the day.

Evening: Return to Waterford

Take the bus back to Waterford. Spend the evening at leisure and prepare for a second day exploring more of Waterford’s coastline.

Day Two: Dunmore East Coastal Experience

Morning: Waterford to Dunmore East

Depart Waterford by bus to Dunmore East on Route 358, which you can catch from the main bus station on the quays in the city centre (full timetable available here: Timetable). The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, offering a scenic and straightforward transfer from city to coast, as you leave the urban streets behind and make your way towards one of Waterford’s most picturesque seaside villages.

Late Morning: Dunmore East Cliff Walk

Begin your day with the renowned Dunmore East Cliff Walk, where winding paths lead you along dramatic cliffs with sweeping views across the sea. Keep an eye on the water below  this stretch of coastline is rich in marine life, and you may spot seabirds, dolphins, or other wildlife just offshore.

Midday: Lunch by the Sea

Enjoy lunch by the sea at East Pier, the best fish and chips around, trust me, you’ll find, it’s the perfect way to refuel while soaking up the harbour atmosphere.

Afternoon: Coastal Exploration

Spend the afternoon exploring Dunmore East at your own pace. Wander around the harbour, relax on the small beaches and coves, or simply sit and take in the rhythm of the village as boats come and go. The compact setting makes it easy to enjoy without rushing. For those looking to add a bit of adventure to their day, Dunmore East Adventure Centre offers a range of land and water-based activities, from kayaking and sailing to climbing and team challenges, making it a great option for families, groups, or anyone wanting a more active coastal experience.

Evening: Dinner, Drinks and Stay

Round off your day with dinner and drinks at The Haven Hotel, overlooking Dunmore East Harbour. With its lively atmosphere, regular gigs, and popular tribute shows, it’s a great place to experience the local evening scene.

If you wish to extend your stay, the hotel also offers comfortable accommodation, making it an ideal base to fully enjoy the coastal experience.

Did You Know

Dunmore East is one of Ireland’s most important historic fishing harbours, and its sheltered location has made it a safe haven for ships for centuries. Today, the same waters are rich in marine life  so as you walk the cliffs, keep an eye out as dolphins are often spotted just offshore.
