On the Road with Lady Portarlington talk by Robert O’ Byrne Irish Aesthete

In 1778 Lady Caroline Stuart married John Dawson, future first Earl of Portarlington and came to live in Ireland, Good-looking and popular, the couple were invited to stay at many of the finest Irish country houses, their visits recorded by Caroline in letters to her sister back in England. This talk will follow the Portarlingtons on their visits to a number of properties, including Dromana where they spent a happy few days with the second Earl Grandison, and give insights into everyday country house life in the late 18th century.

 

Reimagining Dromana´s mid 18th century interiors – Earl Grandison´s 1755 Inventory by William Fraher.

William Fraher, highly respected Curator of Waterford County Museum, who specialises in the material culture of Waterford County houses, will capture the imagination of the audience with a facinating talk on the interiors of Dromana at that time including talking about Libraries and their contents. Patricia Mc Carthy in her book “Life in the Country House in Georgian Ireland” declares the earliest inventory is that of Dromana (1755).

 

Following the talks a light afternoon tea will be served.
