Coumshingaun Lough and Kilclooney Loop
The Coumshingaun Lough and Kilclooney Loop is one of the most dramatic and rewarding hikes in County Waterford. Set in the Comeragh Mountains, this 6.1 km loop trail offers breathtaking views of Coumshingaun Lough, a glacial lake surrounded by steep cliffs and rugged, rocky terrain. Beginning at Kilclooney Wood car park, the route climbs sharply through woodland before opening out onto panoramic mountain vistas.
The hike takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete and involves an elevation gain of around 630 metres. It is considered challenging and is best suited to experienced hikers with good fitness levels. The loop is typically tackled in a clockwise direction to help manage the steepest sections more safely.
Along the way, walkers are treated to a rich diversity of landscapes — from shaded forest paths to high mountain ridges — as well as the chance to encounter native wildlife and striking geological features. On a clear day, views stretch across the countryside and down to the sea.
Hikers should wear sturdy footwear and bring appropriate gear, including layers, water and a map or GPS device, as signage is limited and weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
Whether you’re looking for a test of endurance or simply an unforgettable nature experience, the Coumshingaun and Kilclooney Loop delivers a stunning showcase of Ireland’s wild beauty.
