Waterford Viking Marathon 2024

Save the date because on the 23rd of June 2024 the city will (once again) be overrun with Vikings. With options for full marathon, half marathon and quarter marathon, all participants will have the opportunity to choose which distance suits them (as well as what pace, as there is also a walking option) as they set out on what is to be an uplifting fitness challenge in the historical surroundings of Waterford City.

The race will begin between two of the city’s main cultural attractions, Bishop’s Palace, and House of Waterford. Competitors opting for the full marathon will have the added bonus of passing through the idyllic Mount Congreve, a historic estate surrounded by beautiful gardens on the outskirts of the city, while both full and half marathon runners will get the opportunity to marvel at views of the River Suir while running along the Greenway. All competitors will be treated to the added motivation of energy stations as well as uplifting music to accompany them on their journey along the Waterford’s Viking Marathon route.

All runners will take in sights such as Reginald’s Tower, Ireland’s oldest civic building, followed by a route that runs parallel to the River Suir and onto the Greenway.

Waterford Viking Marathon is in its 12th year and has grown impressively as an event each year. This year to really get into the spirit of the Viking Marathon, a world record attempt will be made to get the most amount of people to dress as Vikings for the quarter marathon, the perfect opportunity to get moving and have a bit of fun. Participants are also encouraged to bring their supporters along to enjoy the atmosphere on the day.

All participants who complete the race will be issued with a medal to mark their participation in the event. Whether you’re a local runner or coming from further afield, if you want to see the city come alive for what is to be one of the most energetic events of the summer, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

This year’s event aims to be as sustainable as possible with new measures in place such as recyclable water cartons, recyclable race bags, QR codes with event information etc.

Each year the event is partnered with charity members, this years, As I Am, Irelands National Autism Charity will be partnered with The Viking Marathon and have worked to make the event more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

Early bird registration is available up to the 22nd of April and participants can register up until the 9th of June. Registration is accessible on the Viking Marathon website.
