OldVelos Cycling Festival

The eagerly awaited OldVelos Cycling Festival will take place on Saturday 28th August in Curraghmore House, Portlaw, Co. Waterford. Postponed last year due to Covid, this year’s one-day event, sponsored by OK Cycles, has something for all cycling enthusiasts from leisure rides, grass track racing, historic 10mile time-trial and the much loved vintage ‘Velo Expo’ and Concours d’Elegance competition. Entrants are required to register for the leisure rides, grasstrack racing and vintage TT on the Cycling Ireland Eventmaster portal to comply with Covid regulations. You will find a link to the entry form here

The morning leisure cycles see riders’ enjoying the quietest roads of West Waterford and parts of the Waterford Greenway before returning to beautiful Curraghmore House. This ride will be suitable for any vintage bike, from High Nelly’s of Old to modern classics of the Kelly and Roche era.
Grass track is back! Cyclists and spectators of a certain age will remember grass track racing from the time when every major town held its own ‘Sports Days’. OldVelos grass track revival harkens back to these events. This will be an event to be enjoyed by both the spectators and competitors! There will be separate events for fixed or cyclocross bikes such as timetrials, sprints, scratch, handicap and pursuit racers. Come and see which club wins the inaugural team prize.
The Festival will culminate with 10mile TT, evoking memories of the Nissan Classic, when fans came to see the fastest cyclists in the world on competing on Irish roads. The ‘out and back’ route will be between Portlaw and OK Cycles’ home in Carrick-on-Suir. Expect to see vintage bikes dating as far back as back as 1920’s competing.

There will be an exhibition of vintage bikes, jerseys and paraphernalia from cycling’s golden age on display throughout the day in the grounds Curraghmore House and the serious collectors will be hoping to take home the coveted Concours d’Elégance prize.
