West Waterford Athletics Club are organising the third Eurofins Greenway Half Marathon, which will be taking place on Saturday 14th September. This ever popular event is once again completely sold out for 2019. The event starts near the Workhouse, Kilmacthomas and finishes between the Gold Coast Road and Clonea Road crossings.

As a club, West Waterford Athletics Club, committed in 2019 to use biodegradable cups at all of our events. For the Eurofins Greenway Half marathon the club plans to take this one step further. Ireland is the top producer of plastic waste in Europe; generating an average of 61kgs per person per year (the average weight of a female runner). This is double what the UK produces. A huge part of the problem is single use water bottles. These bottles are used for on average 12 minutes before being discarded and then take up to 450 years to decompose.

For this year’s race West Waterford AC have teamed up with Waterford Greenway, Waterford City & County Council and Refill Ireland to eliminate single use plastic bottles. Refill Ireland will be providing a water station at the end of the race and all the cups that are used are gathered up afterwards in special bins and taken away and cleaned then re-used for other events. For all other water stations on the course we will be using biodegradeable cups.

We would ask all our athletes to come on board and help us make this happen. We can all do something and as a runner we can start by using a reusable water bottle on training runs.

Best of luck to the organisers and all those training for this wonderful event.
