The Blackwater Valley Opera Festival, Ireland’s only summer opera festival, is a celebration of the finest opera and classical music set in the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East. Tucked away in the breath-taking Blackwater Valley, we stage performances of the highest artistic quality featuring both Irish and international stars and emerging talent of the classical music world.

As much a celebration of opera as it is a celebration of the valley from whence it takes its name, the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival takes place in a range of historical locations across the Valley. The heart of the Festival is, however, Lismore Castle and Gardens on the banks of the Blackwater River. Lismore Castle has been the festival’s home since its founding in 2010 and it is here that an intimate, close-up opera takes place each year.

In all that it does, the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival aims to promote excellence, both by featuring the finest international stars, and by championing emerging artists who are at the beginning of promising careers. To this end, we are proud to annually award the BVOF Bursary and to work in collaboration with Irish Heritage in supporting early-career musicians.

Nevertheless, it is futile to champion musicians working today without paying equal heed to the next generation. That is why the Festival is committed to fostering a love of music and opera in the next generation through our Education and Outreach. We run a thriving schools’ programme based on our commitment to fostering a real passion for music in young people today. BVOF collaborates with Mobile Music Machine to run classroom workshops, and also invite the schoolchildren and teachers of the Blackwater Valley region to attend the opera’s dress rehearsal for a magical night of opera.
