Comeragh Mountains

From the beating of a curlew’s wing to the thump of a local musician’s bodhrán, a visit to the Comeragh Mountains is the perfect way to beat the stress and strain of everyday life.

Lying off the N25 just a short drive from Dungarvan, the Comeraghs are Waterford’s very own Great Outdoors, a mountain range stretching from the coast inland as far as Clonmel. The range is formed by 12 distinct mountains, with a high point of 792m (2,598ft) and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean offering countless opportunities for walkers and hikers.  But you don’t have to get your boots on to get the most out of these mountains. The Comeraghs are crammed with options for all kinds of visitors, from the dramatic scenery of the Nire Valley to the Boolas at Rathgormack, the highest lake in the mountains. Another of Waterford’s great wow moments is Mahon Falls, an 80-metre waterfall nestled close to a car park in the mountains near Lemybrien.

From delightful villages like Kilbrien and Rathcormack to the unique ecosystem of the moorland, the Comeraghs really do have it all… right down to a mysterious ‘magic road’. Drivers bringing their car to a stop here have been known to  roll backwards up a hill.
